Hello and welcome to Romance Recipes! Every Thursday and Friday I will introduce you to a new author and a new recipe! Two of my favorite things! This week I am bringing you author, Diane Burton, and her recipe for Mac N Cheese (Diane took the pic of the delicious mac n cheese herself) along with an introduction to her book, Switched, Too. Please join me in welcoming Diane and savor her recipe for Mac N Cheese as you read about her new book!
In Switched, Too Veronese Qilana spends three weeks on a farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan pretending to be her twin. Far away from her starship with its food replicators, she has to learn to cook. She finds a recipe that seems so easy even she could make it.
Mac N Cheese
1 box (16 oz.) medium shell pasta
2 cans condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted
1 pound Colby cheese, sliced
garlic salt to taste
Prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain. Combine soup and milk. Spray large oven-safe bowl or deep baking dish with non-stick spray. Layer in this order: pasta, soup mixture, sprinkle with garlic salt, then cheese. Repeat. Depending on depth of baking dish, it’s usually 3 layers, ending with cheese on top.
-Since Veronese (like all the people in her alien culture) is vegetarian, she opted to use cream of mushroom soup.
Be careful what you wish for…you might get it.
Down-sized astronaut candidate Scott Cherella leaps at the chance to go into space. He just has to pretend to be the captain of an Alliance of Planets starship. His lifelong dream quickly becomes a nightmare when sabotage erupts. To save the ship and crew he has to depend on an uptight, disapproving colleague.
The only time Veronese Qilana broke the rules tragedy resulted. She vowed never again. Now, to protect the real starship captain, she’ll have to deceive the crew by helping the imposter. They must work together to uncover the saboteur and get the crew safely home. In doing so, they discover opposites really do attract.
In Switched, Too, Scott Cherella, a downsized astronaut candidate, has taken his twin’s place as commander of a starship. In the following scene, he depends on an alien to help him through the complexities of his first meal. What he wouldn’t give for some good, old American food. Like Mac N Cheese.
“I will eat here.” Scott selected a corner table, away from those that were occupied. Once they were seated, he nodded to his companion. “You may order for us.”
Drakus looked flabbergasted. “But, sir, I do not know what you wish to eat.”
Drakus shook his head then pressed a small square pad flush with the tabletop. “Two hot selerias and Mid-Day Repast for the captain.”
Scott settled back in his chair. “Playing it safe, Drakus?”
Moments later, a robot server rolled between the tables, a tray clutched in its metal appendages. The robot set cups of steaming liquid in front of them then departed.
Scott picked up the mug and sniffed the dark green depths. Fragrant, gingery maybe. He took a sip.
“Captain,” Drakus began hesitantly. “I have noticed your speech is peppered with American slang. I mean no disrespect, but you didn’t act or look this different before you went to Earth. May I ask why you decided to come out of the closet?”
Diane Burton combines her love of mystery, adventure, science fiction, and romance into writing romantic fiction.
