Wilhelm Montegue makes a bet with Sophia: If she changes into her riding clothes and beats him to the stable, she wins chocolate-covered peaches. If he saddles both their horses before she comes back wearing the riding habit, he wins a kiss.
Who do you think wins the bet? Here’s a hint: they both get what they want, eventually. Sophia is easily bribed with anything involving chocolate and fruit, but who can blame her? Turn me loose at a fondue party, and you’ll have to roll me out the door.
Want to throw a chocolate fondue party? It’s easy. A guaranteed hit. You don’t even need a fondue fountain; just melt chocolate chips in a crockpot. (Some recipes call to add oil or baking wax, but it works without.) Bamboo shishkabob sticks are the only utensils you’ll need, and toothpicks will do in a pinch.
Everyone expects strawberries at your chocolate fondue party, but you’ll dazzle your friends with a few surprises. Sophia likes sliced peaches, as you know. Pineapple is my favorite. Try pears, bananas, apples, cantaloupe, grapes, cherries, and raspberries. Mango, mandarin oranges, pomegranate seeds and even fresh coconut taste great dipped in chocolate.
Now choose contrasting flavors, like pretzel sticks, nuts, and popcorn. For those with a sweet tooth, try marshmallows, caramel squares, graham crackers, angel food cake, candy canes, gummy bears or cinnamon bears, and rice crispy squares. I’ve heard chocolate-covered bacon and french fries are a big hit for some…
Let your imagination run wild – everything tastes better with chocolate! Your guests will love sampling the fondue, and you’ll be the proud host of the best party of the season. Enjoy!
Now, Dear Readers, tell me what I missed. What would you dip in chocolate?
“If she truly knows her business, a woman has the mind of a diplomat, a general, and Cleopatra, all in one.”
Anne-Sophia Duncombe is ruined, a victim of her father’s high-stakes gambling. Stolen moments at the piano are her boon. Wilhelm Montegue is a washed up war hero, rumored insane. His “condition”–modern diagnosis: savant autism–is the source of his gift for composing music. Anne-Sophia and Wilhelm thought they had missed their chance for love, but anything can happen in the music room.
|Sophia dug the toe of her slipper into the rug and staged losing her balance. Wilhelm grabbed her arm to steady her, which sent the snifter of whiskey down the front of her dress while the tray toppled into Lord Devon’s lap, spilling the wine right on target.
Wilhelm shot out of his chair, drawing the eyes of every guest to his soaked groin.
“Lord Devon! Forgive me, I am so clumsy!” Sophia pressed a hand to her throat, making an effort to appear aghast.
“The fault is mine, my lady. Alas I have ruined your lovely dress.” Allow me to remove it for you, his eyes said. He turned to his guests, taking Sophia’s arm. “Do excuse us.”
Us? Us! Her cheeks heated. Certain every guest imagined precisely what Lord Devon implied, she left the room on his arm, silently cursing him every name she could conjure.
“Thank you.” He kissed her temple.
“I am sorry about your trousers.”
“It was worth it.”
2012 RWA Golden Heart finalist Moriah Densley sees nothing odd at all about keeping both a violin case and a range bag stuffed with pistols in the back seat of her car. They hold up the stack of books in the middle, of course. She enjoys writing about Victorians, assassins, and geeks. Her muses are summoned by the smell of chocolate, usually at odd hours of the night. By day her alter ego is your friendly neighborhood music teacher. Moriah lives in Las Vegas with her husband and four children.
