Today I am bringing you author, Liza O’Connor, and her recipe for Carrie Hanson’s Grandmother’s recipe for Chocolate Turtles along with an introduction to her humorous contemporary romance, Coming to Reason, Book #3 in A Long Road to Love Series. Carrie Hanson’s Grandmother’s recipe for Chocolate Turtles 


This is your objective: 

Liza Narcotic turtles

Be warned this will be a big turtle.

Make sure the caramel flows halfway over the legs and head to prevent wandering body parts.

Now the actual recipe


  • A bag of walnuts (shelled)
  • A bag of pecans (shelled)
  • A bag of brazil nuts (naked)
  • Chocolate

Buy a big bag of semi-sweet chocolates unless you find rich dark chocolate bar in your pantry and you are fairly certain they don’t belong to the Russian mafia.

  • Caramel

You can buy caramel cubes at the store and melt them. But make sure you unwrap them or you’ll make a terrible inedible mess.

If you want to make your own caramel:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter, cut into small cubes

And you will need a food thermometer.

1. Prepare a large pan by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with nonstick cooking spray. Construct your turtle’s undercarriage according to the above diagram.

2. Combine the cream and condensed milk in a small saucepan, and place the saucepan on a burner set to the lowest heat setting. You want the milk and cream to be warm, but do not allow it to boil.

3. In a medium-large saucepan combine the corn syrup, water, and granulated sugar over medium-high heat. Stir the candy until the sugar dissolves.

4. Allow the mixture to come to a boil and cook until it reaches 250 degrees.

5. Add the softened butter chunks and the warm milk-cream mixture. The temperature should go down about 30 degrees.

6. Continue to cook the caramel, stirring constantly so that the bottom does not scorch. Cook until the thermometer reads 244, and the caramel is a beautiful dark golden brown.

Upon making or melting your caramel:

7. Remove the caramel from the heat and allow it to cool slightly then generously spoon on your turtle structure.  Be sure the caramel covers half the pecan legs and half the brazil nut head.

8. Melt your chocolate in a double boiler (or a microwave) then spoon it on top of the caramel

9. Cool your newly formed turtles in the refrigerator if you can find room.  If you leave them out on the counter, they will mysteriously disappear. I’m serious. Everyone will swear they didn’t touch them, but somehow the big guys will wander off.

This recipe first shows up in Book One of A Long Road to Love, called Worst Week Ever. However, it’s still being discussed in Book Three, Coming To Reason. Carrie has been making this desert all her life with no problems. But that one time she used some bars of chocolate she found in Trent’s well stocked kitchen and the next thing she knew the butler and her systems manager were high as kites and required medical care. 

But that was not the recipe’s fault and it wants everyone to stop blaming it for something it had no control over. It didn’t tell Carrie to use Rich Dark Chocolate laced with the narcotic Europa. And the recipe is most upset that two books later, it’s still being taken to task for this debacle. It’s a good recipe. Use it properly and it will serve you well. It’s time we all come to reason and give it a break already!

She then explained how Trent’s cook had chocolate imported from Russia containing a high concentration of narcotics. “I needed to get my systems guy to come in on a Sunday after his horrible prior day, so I offered to bake him his favorite treat, chocolate caramel turtles.”

She studied Dan but couldn’t tell if she’d calmed his concerns or not. He had an impressive poker face.

“Mars caught me in the kitchen making the turtles and got upset with me. I didn’t know, as a guest, I couldn’t be in the kitchen.”

Dan smiled and nodded.

“I’d already finished making the turtles when he arrived. So he put the drugged turtles in the refrigerator to chill and sent me from the kitchen.

“Later, he gave me a bag of chilled turtles to give to Jack. I wanted to put a few aside for Sam and Trent, but he forbade it. He’d eaten one and claimed it so delicious those two would never eat real food again if they tasted the turtles.”

She grimaced. “At the time, I thought it a great compliment. If only I’d tasted one.… I didn’t suspect a problem until Jack went crazy over his first turtle. Curious why he thought them a whole level better than my prior batches, I took one nibble on the foot of one and it almost knocked me to the ground. First, I called Sam”


“Trent’s driver.”

“Ah! Sam.”

The way he said it made her suspect he knew Sam was Trent’s half-brother.

“Anyway, I asked him for help, but he said Mars came first. So I called in Tiny and Tall to get the turtles away from Jack. Poor Jack almost died. And Mars remained in the hospital for two days.”

“What about you?”

“Dr. Lenard tested me, but I didn’t test positive. I guess because I nibble rather than eat. And the turtle’s foot consisted mostly of a pecan.”

Dan rubbed his face.

“Mars says if you call him and state my version, he’ll confirm it. His profession doesn’t allow him to reveal anything. He’s kind of like a priest, a war general, and mother all mixed into one.”
