Hello and welcome to Romance Recipes where I am happy to introduce you to a new author and a new recipe! Two of my favorite things! Today I am bringing you author, Joanne Guidoccio, and her recipe for Tiramisu along with an introduction to her book, Between Land and Sea. Please join me in welcoming Joanne and savor her recipe for Tiramisu as you read about her new book!
In addition to twelve months of online mermaid support, Barbara Davies (aka Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom) was allowed to select three Specialist Skills. She chose Cuisine as her first Skill and whipped up Tiramisù for her first dinner party.
For anyone who has never tasted this dessert, imagine the following…
A light-mocha-flavored-whipped-cream concoction on lady finger pastry soaked in strong espresso with a tantalizing hint of amaretto liqueur.
A bit of history…
On the occasion of Grand Duke Cosimo III De’Medici’s State visit, several Sienese pastry chefs decided to develop a dessert that would satisfy the Duke’s sweet tooth. Initially called Zuppa del Duca (Duke’s Pudding), it was a terrific success, especially among the courtesans who needed to fortify themselves between amorous encounters. They claimed the dessert was both stimulating and aphrodisiac and renamed it, Tiramisù (Pick Me Up).
1 package lady fingers
250 ml Nutriwhip Lite
2 cups of cold, sweetened espresso coffee
1/2 cup amaretto liqueur
1 semi-sweet chocolate, grated
- Beat cream cheese using the electric mixer.
- In a separate bowl, whip the Nutriwhip Lite.
- In another bowl, combine the coffee and the amaretto.
- Combine cheese and Nutriwhip together.
- Cut the lady fingers in half, lengthwise.
- Place one layer at the bottom of a 9″ x 13″ rectangular pan.
- Sprinkle enough of the coffee/amaretto mixture to cover the lady fingers.
- Spread the cheese/Nutriwhip mixture on the lady fingers.
- Continue layering. The top layer must be the cheese mixture.
- Cover with grated chocolate.
- Refrigerate for 24 hours.
Barbara picked up the tablet and pressed the green button.
Lisa738 appeared. “Greetings, Barbara. What can I do for you today?”
“I’m giving my first dinner party and I’m not certain—”
Lisa738 interrupted, “You need a Specialist Skills button. No problem, but I think you should know that you are only entitled to two more of these buttons during the coming year.”
Barbara made a mental note to ask Gillian for more information regarding the tablet. “Of course. What will I be able to do with this button?”
“You will be able to whip up any dish in any cuisine. You will also have an extensive knowledge of the ingredients and nutritional value of any meal you create.”
“Like Martha Stewart?”
Lisa738 laughed. “Martha Stewart. Rachel Ray. Nigella Lawson. You will be able to hold your own with any of them.” She pointed to the new button that appeared below the screen.
Barbara picked up the button, peeled off the coating, applied it to her left temple, and waited for the unsettling sensation. This time, the experience was more intense. Barbara lost her balance and had to hold on to a nearby chair for support.
Lisa738 winced. “I forgot to warn you about the power of the Specialist Skills buttons. You may need to lie down for an hour or so. Are you planning a large dinner party?”
It must be very lonely for Lisa738 in the underwater kingdom. Barbara recalled her few interactions with other Numbers mermaids. She knew they spent long hours in front of terminals and did not socialize with the other mermaids. She decided to be kind. “No, it will just be Graham and me.”
Lisa738 nodded in approval. “How is that progressing?”
“We’ve been going out for almost two months now. Our relationship is a comfortable one.”
“Is that enough for you? In spite of all that has happened, you are still a Bella. You need and deserve passion.”
After giving up her tail for an international banker, Isabella of the Mediterranean kingdom is aged beyond recognition. The horrified banker abandons her on the fog-drenched shores of southwest England, leaving her to face a difficult human journey as a plain and practically destitute fifty-three-year-old woman.
With the help of a magic tablet and online mermaid support, Isabella evolves into the persona of Barbara Davies. Along the way, she encounters a cast of unforgettable characters, among them former mermaids, supportive and not-so-supportive women, deserving and undeserving men, and several New Agers.

In high school, Joanne dabbled in poetry, but it would be over three decades before she entertained the idea of writing as a career. She listened to her practical Italian side and earned degrees in mathematics and education. She experienced many fulfilling moments as she watched her students develop an appreciation (and sometimes, love) of mathematics. Later, she obtained a post-graduate diploma as a career development practitioner and put that skill set to use in the co-operative education classroom. She welcomed this opportunity to help her students experience personal growth and acquire career direction through their placements.
In 2008, she took advantage of early retirement and decided to launch a second career that would tap into her creative side and utilize her well-honed organizational skills. Slowly, a writing practice emerged. Her articles and book reviews were published in newspapers, magazines, and online. When she tried her hand at fiction, she made reinvention a recurring theme in her novels and short stories. A member of Sisters in Crime, Crime Writers of Canada, and Romance Writers of America, Joanne writes paranormal romance, cozy mysteries, and inspirational literature from her home base of Guelph, Ontario.
