Today I am bringing you author, Nancy Lee Badger, and her recipe for Hot and Spicy Mulled Cider along with an introduction to her latest release, Smolder, Book #3, Clan of Dragons. Multi-published and award-winning author, Nancy Lee Badger, announces her 19th book. The author has used her love of all things Scottish, as well as years as a volunteer at a Scottish festival, to bring her readers another series. Ever since her first books were published in June 2010, she has successfully self-published a variety of novels and novellas. This book is a paranormal fantasy romance and is set centuries ago on the Scottish island of Skye.

I mention hot and spicy mulled cider many times in the three books in my Clan of Dragons series. Since one of the characters is very pregnant, offering her something other than ale or whisky seemed like a good idea. I have made mulled cider in my home, usually around Halloween or Christmas, and want to share my modern version with you.

Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several tree species. I love the scent of cinnamon and believe in its ability to help lower cholesterol, so I use it in my mulled cider. Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree, also not native to Scotland. Unless a trader brought the spice to Skye, I included it because readers are familiar with it, as well as allspice, which is the combination of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Again, this is a fictional story, and I allow the locals at the tavern in Morbhan, using whatever was on hand to spice the brew.

Ingredients:

Ancient style: 

A large pot

A roaring hearth fire

Apples, crushed and strained

Whole apples for stewing

water

Ground cloves

Honey

Or any herbs available

Modern style:

An Electric Crock Pot

Qt. or Gallon of pressed cider

2 teaspoons Whole cloves

6 Cinnamon sticks

Cheesecloth

Kitchen string

(You can also use allspice if you do not have the cloves or cinnamon)

Directions:

If you are an ancient citizen of the Isle of Skye, build up the fire in your cottage’s hearth with bricks of dried peat, while someone else crushes a bushel of apples to create juice. Strain the core, skins, and seeds with your plaide, and add to a heavy stockpot. Add water and some slices of peeled and cored apples to the brew and dump in any spices, herbs, honey, and what-not that might be in your larder. Settle the heavy pot over the fire. Heat to boiling, and stir occasionally. Serve in a heavy metal or pottery tankard.

My New Southern Gal Way: Plug in the electric Crock Pot, turn to ‘high’, and add the cider. Toss whole cloves and cinnamon sticks on a piece of cheesecloth. Tie tight, and toss into the pot. Stir occasionally, and enjoy!
